Serana Retreat

Located in the East Central Texas Plains, this rural site and former rangeland is characterized by gently rolling topography, large swaths of mixed grasses, and is now home to the Serana glamping retreat. New retreat facilities are nestled among a forest of Oaks and Cedar Elms with views oriented toward the open field beyond.

Proposed elements are sensitively located to protect existing trees and minimize disturbance to more pristine areas of the site. The proposed entry to Serana is distinguished by ornamental plantings flanked by a row of oak trees. Upon entry, guests find parking nestled within mature trees and native grasses. Once parked, they can follow the primary loop path north to common areas or south toward the newest private cabins.

Common areas are characterized by orthogonal paths and linear plantings, while private cabins are characterized by curvilinear paths and naturalistic plantings. All program areas showcase native plants and are concentrated within the densely canopied western portion of the site. Views are largely oriented eastward toward the clearing beyond. These design strategies aid wayfinding and establish the design language for the retreat at large.

Courtyards, gardens, and sweeping views of the greater landscape invite guests outdoors to enjoy the serenity of the Central Texas savanna.
